The CHARLOTTE AREA EDUCATIONAL CONSORTIUM (CAEC), was established in February 1969 for the purpose of fostering attainment of the highest level of collegiate and university education for the Charlotte Metrolina area. Today, it is an organization of 24 colleges and universities that encourages the sharing of resources and energies among institutions and seeks to generate creative ideas for the most effective use of human and other resources available among the institutions.

GOALS

Foremost among the goals of the Consortium is to afford students access to broader educational experiences, both curricular and extracurricular.  The CAEC also seeks:

  • To encourage cooperation among the administrators, faculty and students of the member institutions

  • To afford students access to broader educational experiences, both curricular and extracurricular

  • To encourage multi-institutional use of faculty and faculty exchanges among institutions

  • To promote sharing equipment and facilities

  • To encourage cooperation among the administrators, faculty and students of the member institutions

  • To foster cooperative sponsorship of programs and projects that no single institution could support

  • To act as a forum for sharing information among member institutions

  • To articulate to the region the resources available through the Consortium and its member institutions

MEMBERSHIP

Membership in the Charlotte Area Educational Consortium consists of two categories: regular membership and associate membership. Regular membership is open to any nonprofit college or university based in the Charlotte metropolitan region which is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The annual membership fee for regular members for 2001-02 is $400.

Associate membership in the Consortium is open to appropriately accredited institutions and other nonprofit organizations who support the purpose of the Consortium but do not qualify for regular membership. Associate members may attend and participate in discussions at all meetings; however, they are not extended voting privileges. The annual membership fee for associate members for 2001-02 is $200.

The Consortium is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of the chief administrative officers of the member colleges and universities and a Council comprised of the chief academic officers and delegates from the member institutions.

ACTIVITIES

  • Full-time students at regular member colleges and universities are eligible to participate in the inter-institutional student exchange program of the Consortium. This enables them to enroll in some courses at other CAEC schools without paying additional fees.

  • A teacher educational division provides networking and information for member institutions involved in higher education.

  • Special discipline divisions are encouraged and supported.

  • Two representatives from each member institution are eligible to attend the Administrative Leadership Institutes underwritten by member dues.

  • A library cooperative program allows faculty the use of other libraries to supplement their home institution's resources.

  • The Consortium also sponsors faculty visitations, as well as conferences and forums dealing with issues in higher education.
